Update on Wheelchair

December 24, 2004 by

Hello everyone:
I just wanted to give you an update on Savanna’s wheelchair.  As I expected, the insurance company still will not cover a power wheelchair; they will pay for a manual chair.  As most of you know, Tim lost his job last week so we will be continuing on COBRA insurance (which is outrageously high) until he gets a new job.
What we have decided to do is go ahead and get a manual chair and then hopefully with a new insurance company, a power wheelchair might be covered.  We are going with a company that makes a wheelchair that has one seating system that will attach to both a manual and a power base.  A big part of the expense for the wheelchair is the seating system.  Because Savanna is so weak, it will need lots of custom supports made that will hold her in place in an upright position.  We felt like with this decision, worst case scenario is we will have to pay for a power base at some point.  That will probably run around $10,000.
I was adamant about getting the wheelchair ordered and billed to the insurance this year, since we have already met our deductible and maximum out of pocket expenses for the year.  We are hoping to only have to continue COBRA for a few months at best.

Please continue to pray for the right job to come along for Tim.  He does have an interview tomorrow, which is great since we didn’t expect to have any interviews until the 1st of the year.  Christmas time has got to be the worst time of year to lose a job because most companies are not hiring or even interviewing.  I expect Savanna’s wheelchair will probably take about 6 weeks to be delivered.  At least this way we can start getting her accustomed to sitting in a chair before we move ahead with her having her own independent mobility.  She is doing well for now, still trying to get back to “baseline” after her sickness over Thanksgiving.
I will keep you updated on the wheelchair as I get more info.  We appreciate everyone’s help with trying to find something for her.  I think having the seating system will allow us to easier find the funds or the possible donation of a power base.

Hope you all have a great holiday!

Blessings,
Mindy, Tim & Savanna
